DJ (Profile): Frankie Knuckles Way

The Godfather of House Music

Frankie Knuckles is a critical pioneer in elevating the culture of House that began to bubble in Chicago in the late 70's. Coincidentally, Frankie Knuckles also happens to be a native of the Boogie Down Bronx proving that The Boogie Down knows how to rock a fucking party!

While attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan, Frankie took on gigs DJin, but that all changed once he took on the Warehouse, Chicago's famed nightclub that spawned the name House Music. From 1977-1982 a movement was born, greater than Studio 54's disco scene (At least House is still around...).

The Warehouse became a staple of Chicago's culture and although the club closed its doors in 1982, in August 2004, 22 years later, Frankie Knuckles was honored with a street name "The Godfather of House Music Frankie Knuckles Way"

After the Warehouse, Frankie opened his own club called The Power Plant, which closed in 1986. In 1987 Def Mix Productions was formed and Frankie took on a heavier load in production work. He joined Virgin Records in 1990 and in 1992 he released the "Whistle Song" which gave Frankie a King Midas pat on the back when a licensing deal was given for a Nestea commercial made for the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona.

GOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL!!!

In 1997 Frankie was honored with the first Grammy Award for Best Dance Remixer of the year!

Doesn't that look nice?!?
As Wale would say, I would wear that around my neck!

In 2006 Frankie launched his digital label Noice! Music and continues to release productions with Def Mix.

Although accredited with great honor, Frankie remains humble and insists that he was only a player in the grand scheme of beats. Frankie recognizes the contributions of DJ's in D.C., Philly and New York that were doing their thing at the same time as Knuckles. Chicago's rep made the Warehouse a juicy target for the media!

Knuckles still keeps a steady work schedule or shall I say World schedule. If you're around any of these venues I would definitely check it out! If you're in or close to New York City, check out the Electric Zoo Festival in September.
